
Base Manager will oversee an entire event site. This involves managing the volunteers assigned to the base and liaising with the set up manager to ensure that all the equipment is set up on time. On the larger bases you will have the support of Coordinators who will oversee specific areas such as Registration and Check-in.
Base Coordinators will support the Base Managers and supervise a team of volunteers in specific areas such as Registration and Check-in. You must be comfortable with managing people and solving problems.
Base Volunteers will work on one of the start/finish sites or rest stops along the course. Positions range from water assistants to registration, parking, information and merchandise. You will work in a team and be overseen by a Base Coordinator.
Sector Manager will oversee an entire sector covering approximately 15km of the course. As a Sector Manager, you will manage volunteers assigned as route marshals within your sector. One or two motorcycle marshals will be assigned to support you by acting as your ‘eyes & ears’ during the event. You must be comfortable with managing people and solving problems. You must hold a full current drivers licence and provide your own vehicle. You will need to drive through your sector several times to ensure it is managed safely & efficiently.
Route Marshals support participants by directing them along the course, advising them of approaching hazards, assisting police with traffic control where necessary and forming a communications network. It is also your role to encourage the riders along their journey. A Sector Manager will oversee your area and make sure you are comfortable in your role.
Motorcycle Marshals are responsible for escorting cyclists at a safe speed through difficult parts of the course and act as key links in the communication network. You are like crucial to the safety of the event. You must hold a motorcycle licence and provide your own motorcycle.
Mobile Support ride in pairs along the course encouraging participants & assisting with general bike repairs, punctures, loose chains etc. It's a great way to enjoy the ride and assist others at the same time. Bicycle mechanics will be located at each rest site to help with the major repairs, so you won't be expected to perform miracles. Basic bike maintenance skills are required to fulfil this role. We supply puncture repair kits & various tubes so all you need is your bike, basic bike tools and a smile on your dial.
Bike Lift (Sydney) involves transporting bikes from Wollongong to Sydney. Located at Sydney Park, St Peters you will be required to unload bikes from trucks and return them to the correct owners. You must be comfortable with lifting bikes. This position is suitable for individuals or those who are volunteering as a team. Approximately 6 to 10 people will be needed.
Bike Lift (Wollongong) involves transporting bikes from Wollongong to Sydney. Located at Stuart Park, North Wollongong you will be responsible for selling bike lift tickets as well as packaging and loading bikes on to trucks. This position is suitable for individuals or those who are volunteering as a team. Approximately 18 people will be needed for this position.
Bus Crew (Wollongong) will be required to check tickets and assist the riders on to the buses, which transport them back to Sydney. You will be working closely with the bike lift crew to ensure that the trucks and buses are coordinated to leave on time.
Massage Crew (Wollongong) provide exhausted riders with much needed muscle relief. We are looking for certified masseurs to offer short relaxing massages. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience while meeting new people and making contacts. Volunteers will need to bring their own portable massage table, oils and towels.
Signage Crews are responsible for erecting and dismantling signage along the course before and after the event. This role requires a very early start and can be a long day however you have plenty of time to rest while the cyclists are riding. A Ute will be supplied for use on the day and a Class C vehicle license is required for driving this.
Equipment Team are required to help set up their allocated event site. This includes packing and unloading trucks, erecting marquees, signage, drinking taps etc. It can be physically demanding work and often requires working longer hours than most volunteer roles. However you will find yourself working with a great bunch of people who make up our core team of long-serving MS volunteers. If available, you may be required to assist with pre-event duties including packing of equipment trucks and site set-up at the major bases.
