Charter for supporting carers in the workplace

Multiple Sclerosis Australia (MSA) Commitment to Carers in the Workplace

At Multiple Sclerosis Australia, we recognise and value the vital role carers play in supporting individuals living with multiple sclerosis and other conditions. To this end, we have developed an MSA Carer Strategy that outlines our plan for supporting carers in the workplace.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and respectful workplace that acknowledges the unique challenges faced by carers. This charter outlines our commitment to creating a carer-friendly work environment, in line with the Carer Recognition Act 2010 and the principles of the Carer Inclusive Workplace Initiative. To demonstrate this further, MS Australia is seeking to meet the ‘Carers + Employers Standards’ to be nationally recognised as an ‘Accredited Carer Friendly Employers’ workplace.

Our Principles

1. Recognition of Carers

We acknowledge the significant contributions of carers and their essential role in the health and well-being of those they support. We commit to recognising their efforts and ensuring they are valued, recognised and supported in the workplace.

2. Supportive Policies

We will implement and maintain workplace policies that support flexible work arrangements, allowing carers to balance their responsibilities effectively. This includes options for remote work, flexible work arrangements, and leave provisions tailored to their needs.

3. Training and Awareness

We will provide training for all staff to raise awareness about the challenges faced by carers. This includes understanding the impact of caring responsibilities on both mental health and work performance, as well as fostering a culture of empathy and support.

4. Open Communication

We encourage open dialogue about caring responsibilities. Carers will be supported in discussing their needs with management without fear of stigma or discrimination.

5. Access to Resources

We will ensure that all employees have access to resources and support services that can assist them in their caring roles. This includes information on external support networks and mental health resources.

6. Continuous Improvement

We are committed to regularly reviewing our practices and policies to ensure they remain effective and relevant. Feedback from carers will be actively sought and valued in this process.

Compliance with the Carer Recognition Act 2010 (Cth)

According to Section 5 of the Act, MS Australia adopts the meaning of carer as:

1. An individual who provides personal care, support and assistance to another individual who needs it because that other individual:

  • has a disability; or
  • has a medical condition (including a terminal or chronic illness); or
  • has a mental illness; or
  • is frail and aged.

2. An individual is not a carer in respect of care, support and assistance he or she provides:

  • under a contract of service or a contract for the provision of services; or
  • in the course of doing voluntary work for a charitable, welfare or community organisation; or
  • as part of the requirements of a course of education or training.

3. To avoid doubt, an individual is not a carer merely because he or she:

  • is the spouse, de facto partner, parent, child or other relative of an individual, or is the guardian of an individual; or
  • lives with an individual who requires care.

MS Australia affirms our commitment to:

  • Recognise and respect the role of carers in our community, including those within our workplace.
  • Ensure that our policies and practices reflect the needs and rights of carers.
  • Promote the inclusion of carers in decision-making processes that affect them.

Multiple Sclerosis Australia is dedicated to creating a workplace that not only acknowledges but actively supports the invaluable contributions of carers. By implementing these principles, we aim to foster an environment where all employees, especially those with caring responsibilities, can thrive both personally and professionally.

This charter serves as a living document, reflecting our ongoing commitment to inclusivity and support for all carers within our organisation. Together, we can create a workplace that champions the rights and well-being of those who care for others.
