MS Australia welcomes the election of Adam Bandt as the new Leader of the Australian Greens in the Australian Parliament.

MS Australia has always enjoyed a progressive and productive relationship with the Australian Greens, including representation on our Parliamentary Friends of Multiple Sclerosis. In the lead up to the 2019 Federal Election, MS Australia produced a 2019 Election Commitments package that set out the nine important ways our Federal politicians could help people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). We were pleased to receive endorsements from both Adam Bandt (pictured above with our National Advocate, Astrid Edwards) and outgoing Greens leader, Richard Di Natale, who stated in a letter to us at the time, "The Australian Greens support efforts to defeat multiple sclerosis in Australia." We take this opportunity to recognise his over ten year contribution to public life and thank Dr Di Natale for his achievements whilst in Federal Parliament. These included a pivotal role in the establishment of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability and more recently in spearheading the Senate Inquiry into Access to Medicinal Cannabis in Australia (see our Submissions page for details.)  Both of these initiatives have significant impact on the MS community.

We congratulate Adam Bandt and look forward to a continued close and professional relationship with the Australian Greens. As we are aware that MS progression and symptom-management medications can affect dental health; we are particularly encouraged by his statements outlining dental care inclusion in Medicare as one of his three immediate priorities.
