Research Report – Associate Professor Peter Crouch and Dr James Hilton. How copper in the body relates to progressive MS

Copper and MS – Researching new treatment options for progressive MS

In this episode we speak to Associate Professor Peter Crouch and Dr James Hilton at The University of Melbourne. They are carrying out a research project – funded through MS Research Australia with the support of the Trish MS Research Foundation – looking at the relationship between copper levels in the body and MS.

They explain how their project evolved from some research they had already carried out looking at copper levels and motor neurone disease (MND). Here they found that particular copper dependent processes are disrupted in the brain and spinal cord. Encouragingly they have a drug which can penetrate into the brain and spinal cord which can restore functionality to some of these disrupted copper dependent processes.

They are hoping that these findings are going to be readily translatable to MS and this is what their project is investigating. Watch the video to find out more.

Your donations fund research into MS. Thank You.

“Thank you for your donations to MS Research Australia and all the time you’ve spent raising money for research into MS. If you can keep up your amazing efforts, we will try to do the same in the lab. As at May 2020, we’re working on a new drug called ‘Copper ATSM’ which we think has potential to be a new treatment for people living with progressive MS. We’re really excited about what’s coming out of the lab at the moment and we’re so appreciative of your efforts. Thank you for funding MS research.” – Associate Professor Peter Crouch
