MS Australia welcomes formal announcement of NDIS Review

18 October 2022

MS Australia, the national peak body for people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) has today welcomed the launch of an Independent Review into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) by the Albanese Government.

Announced by the Minister for the NDIS and Minister for Government Services, Bill Shorten, the NDIS Review will look at the design, operations and sustainability of the NDIS.

It will also look at ways to make the market and workforce more responsive, supportive and sustainable.

Following today’s announcement, MS Australia President, Associate Professor Des Graham said MS Australia has long advocated for improvements to the NDIS to better meet the needs of people living with MS, and more recently formally launched its online campaign – A better NDIS for people living with MS.

“We are delighted by the Government’s announcement today and we look forward to participating in the upcoming NDIS Review [consultations] as we have long argued that to be successful, we need greater awareness, understanding and education about MS within the NDIS,” said Associate Professor Graham.

CEO of MS Australia, Rohan Greenland, is enthusiastic about the government’s promise today to have people with disability at its heart when conducting the NDIS Review to restore fairness and rebuild trust in the NDIS.

“Today’s announcement can give the 1.6 million Australians who live with progressive, degenerative neurological or neuromuscular conditions a reason for great optimism with the promise of meaningful change in the NDIS,” said Mr Greenland.

A final report, including opportunities for reform, will be provided by the Independent Review Panel to Disability Reform Ministers by October 2023, with the overarching goal of the review being to put people with disability back at the centre of the NDIS.
