International Nurses Day is an annual event, observed on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, aimed at promoting awareness and education of the important role of nursing.

Building on the success of the 2024 International Nurses Day Theme, The Economic Power of Care, the 2025 theme shifted focus to the health and wellbeing of nurses – ‘Our Nurses. Our Future’. This theme underscores the critical role a healthy nursing workforce plays in strengthening economies, improving health systems, and ensuring better outcomes for communities worldwide.

MS Australia is marking International Nurses Day 2025 with a focus on the important role of MS Nursing. We are also releasing a report outlining what we can do to better support our MS nursing workforce now and into the future. The report was developed in consultation with MS Nurses Australasia (MSNA) and the MS Australia MS Nurses Working Group. It draws on the lived experience of MS nurses, MS nurse practitioners and people living with MS who have access to a MS nurse.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) International Nurses Day report ‘Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies’ explores the severity of the current worldwide nursing shortage and well-being crisis – and the path forward. The report provides a comprehensive roadmap for creating environments where nurses, patients, and entire health care systems can flourish.

The latest episode of the Raw Nerve Podcast also celebrates the work of MS Nurses. Dr Fiona McKay, Senior Research Coordinator at MS Australia hosts this episode which explore the value of MS Nurses and MS Practitioners. In this episode Fiona speaks with   Belinda Bardsley, Manager N-CRESS at Austin Health, Chair of the MS Australia MS Nurses Working Group and co-author of the MS Nurse Care in Australia report and Tim O’Maley MS Nurse Practitioner, Queensland Health and member of the MS Australia MS Nurses Working Group.
